Dangerously low blood supply attracts support from local car dealership

Carter BloodCare says all registered donors from December 1 to January 10 are entered into drawing for SUV giveaway from The Thompson Group Classic Chevrolet Fleet and Commercial.

Locally, Carter BloodCare, as well as blood programs nationwide, are reporting dangerous declines in blood collections brought on by COVID-19 closures, a recent surge in sickness from the virus and previously aggravated by weather challenges and wildfires in western states. The number of blood donations this year is decreased by tens of thousands compared with the same time last year. “In past years, during the holidays, we have partnered with businesses to host large blood drives with up to 1,000 donors each day, in addition to the blood collections from our 26 donation centers,” said Veronica Moore, Vice President of Organizational Relations at Carter BloodCare. “With the necessity of social distancing and limits in large gatherings, it has been almost insurmountable to overcome the already stretched and stressed blood supply that we typically see in the winter months.” In order to find additional ways of meeting these challenges, Carter BloodCare is hosting the Spirit of Giving SUV giveaway, courtesy of The Thompson Group Classic Chevrolet Fleet and Commercial. “When there is a need in our community, we want to help be a part of the solution. That’s what we do at Classic Fleet for our customers everyday, and in these times, it is especially important,” said Brad Roblyer, General Sales Manager, The Thompson Group Classic Chevrolet Fleet and Commercial. “It’s our privilege to play a role in highlighting the importance of blood donations, and we couldn’t think of a better way than with a giveaway featuring our very popular 2020 Chevrolet Trax.” Thanks to the generosity of Classic Fleet, blood donors that give with Carter BloodCare from December 1, 2020, through January 10, 2021, will be entered into a drawing for a 2020 Chevrolet Trax. Blood donors are altruistic volunteers – giving of themselves to save lives and not expecting something in return. This effort to ensure a healthy blood supply through the holiday season is an unexpected opportunity for blood donors to be the recipient of a new SUV in the New Year. To reduce wait times, donation appointments are encouraged, and blood donors can complete the medical history questionnaire online on the day of donation before they show up to give blood. This helps manage “social distancing.” Donors and staff are required to wear masks, and surfaces are cleaned between each donor. Carter BloodCare continues to offer COVID-19 antibody testing on successful donations for a limited time. Donors can retrieve their results within one to two weeks through a secure portal on the blood center’s website that donors set up following a donation. Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently, and there is no upper age limit for donating blood.
