Carter BloodCare Responds to Blood Needs in Paris, France

Making appointment to give blood is more beneficial to blood supply

DALLAS/FORT WORTH, Texas (November 14, 2015) – Carter BloodCare joins with our larger community around the world in extending our heartfelt concerns toward the people of France, in the wake of Friday’s attacks on Paris. In times such as these, many of us want to help and that sometimes means giving blood.

Carter BloodCare’s President/CEO Merlyn Sayers has this reminder for local blood donors regarding the blood supply in Paris.

“There are strong, close by, national blood programs in Europe that can promptly help if the blood supply in France is challenged by the needs of the victims of terrorism,” said Dr. Sayers. “These horrible events are a reminder that in times of crisis it is the blood that is already available on hospital shelves that meets the immediate transfusions for patients who are casualties.”

When blood donors in the Carter BloodCare service area give blood locally, those donations are used primarily for patients in the community hospitals nearby. However, Carter BloodCare is a part of the national hub and spoke system that connects community blood centers around the United States when blood supplies in one area are threatened due to a localized or regionalized disaster. In those times, Carter BloodCare’s local reserves can be used as needed.

The situation in Paris serves to remind us that blood donations are primarily required locally no matter where that community is situated around the world.

At this time, Carter BloodCare requests that those who can and want to give blood, please make an appointment to do so rather than rushing to make that donation immediately. By calling (800) DONATE-4 or (800) 366-2834 or visiting carterbloodcare.org, the blood center can schedule an appointment for you when your blood type is most needed. Carter BloodCare has 24 donor centers in our 50-plus county area and there are about 30 community blood drives occurring daily. You can find the best place and time for you to give blood by visiting carterbloodcare.org.

Thank you for giving blood so that it is on the shelves when most needed by local patients who require blood transfusions daily. The expectation is 1000 blood donors daily to maintain a safe and sufficient community blood supply.

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent’s consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood. It’s also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
