Brookshire’s to help Carter BloodCare save lives this fall
QUITMAN, Texas (September 13, 2017) – Carter BloodCare has a mission that blood will be on the shelves for any patient that requires a transfusion, right when moments matter, right here in our community. Because of this, many volunteer blood donors give about an hour of their time and what some would call a priceless pint of blood, as regularly as they can. Some donate as often as every two months, since 56 days is the required minimum waiting period between whole blood donations. These heroic donors enable blood transfusions to save, enhance and lengthen the lives of hospital patients. Three lives are saved with each pint of whole blood donated, when that blood can be separated into the primary blood components transfused to patients: red cells, platelets and plasma.
Brookshire’s is hosting a blood drive from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, September 23, at 502 East Goode St. in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Lanie Wright at (903) 571-9667.
September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. When red cells are sickle-shaped instead of round, they can clog blood flow, leading to severe pain crises as well as strokes. Patients with sickle cell disease can require monthly blood transfusions for life; and some of them are children. Carter BloodCare receives from 30 to 40 orders a week from hospitals requesting blood for sickle cell treatments. Please remember to give blood in September for these patients and others.
Remember to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water one to two hours before giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, feel well on the day of donation, and present a government-issued photo ID each time they give blood.
Potential blood donors may volunteer beginning at age 16 with parental consent; 17-year-olds may give independently and there is no upper age limit for donating blood. For more information on donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
